Starling murmurations - wonder of winter

In the winter months, Britain offers many locations to witness the spectacle of starling murmurations, where flocks of these birds create mesmerising patterns in the evening sky.

One such place is the Avalon Marshes in Somerset, between Wells and Bridgwater. Here, the wetlands are the setting for starlings to perform their breathtaking aerial ballet during winter.

RSPB Minsmere in Suffolk is another renowned spot, featuring coastal lagoons and reed beds that serve as a backdrop to the intricate formations of starling flocks.

An easy-to-reach urban location is Brighton's West Pier. Here the murmurations are admired by locals and tourists along the promenade as the birds circle above their sea-protected home.

In Scotland, the Lowlands offer captivating displays, with Gretna Green being a notable site. Additionally, Aberystwyth in Wales provides a picturesque coastal setting for observing these avian marvels.

The Wye Valley, along the England-Wales border, is also recognised for hosting impressive starling murmurations, making it a favoured destination for nature enthusiasts.

These varied locations are a testimony to the adaptability of starlings - happy to roost across wetlands, coastal areas, and urban landscapes, offering both locals and visitors a unique and unforgettable natural spectacle.
